What is how to tell if cantaloupe is ripe?

Here's how to tell if a cantaloupe is ripe:

  • Color: Look for a cantaloupe with a golden, beige or cream colored rind. Avoid those with green undertones, as this indicates under ripeness. The netting should also be raised and prominent.

  • Aroma: A ripe cantaloupe will have a sweet, musky aroma, especially at the stem end. If it smells overly sweet or fermented, it might be overripe. No smell indicates under ripeness.

  • Stem End: The stem end (where the cantaloupe was attached to the vine) should be slightly sunken and smooth. If a piece of stem is still attached, it's likely not fully ripe. A ripe cantaloupe detaches from the vine easily, leaving a smooth indentation.

  • Weight: A ripe cantaloupe will feel heavy for its size. This indicates high sugar and water content.

  • Sound: Give the cantaloupe a tap. A ripe cantaloupe will have a deep, hollow sound. A dull or high-pitched sound suggests it's not ripe.

  • Feel/Texture: The skin should feel firm and slightly waxy, with a bit of "give" when you gently press on the blossom end (opposite the stem end). It shouldn't be rock hard or too soft.
